Cruises

Other Travel

I love cruising. Actually, I should say that Debra and I love cruising, as we've been on more than two dozen cruises over the years. We've enjoyed them all. Most have been with Princess Cruises (17 and counting), but we've also sailed with Viking, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Carnival, and the now-defunct American Hawaii cruise lines.

Why do we love cruising? Because it's like eating at a buffet. We try a little of this (a port stop here) and a little of that (a port stop there), giving us a "taste" of many places in a relatively short period of time. Sometimes this "taste" is all we need; we are satisfied with our experience, but we don't need to go back for seconds. Other times we realize that there is more we'd like to do and see, so we add the "must-return-to" cities to our bucket-list for future travel.
While I love to cruise, I can't reach everywhere I would like to go by ship. "Other travel" is a catch-all term I use for traveling by car, train, bus, plane...well, any mode of transportation other than a cruise ship. Drive-only. Fly-and-drive. Guided tour. Heck, I even hitched a series of rides to travel across the U.S. many years ago.

Sometimes this travel is the means to the end. For example, in 2015 Debra and I drove to Durango and spent the better part of two weeks sightseeing southwest Colorado. Other times this travel is the front and/or back end of a cruise, typically when we've flown across the United States or "across the pond." In 2018, for example, we spent five days in Switzerland and five days in the Netherlands wrapped around the Rhine River cruise.
