David had lived in Atlanta for a few years when, in late 2012, he told Debra and me that he was moving back to Tucson, our home town since 1998. Needless to say, we were thrilled! David arranged to ship his household goods but planned to drive his car rather than ship it.

“Hmmm,” I said to David. “What about a father-son road trip instead.”

“Well, what do you have in mind?” asked David.

“I’ll get back to you in a few days,” I replied.

After researching the route, I laid out an itinerary for a seven-day driving vacation. We would travel through eight states, from Georgia to Arizona, with overnight stops in Tupelo (Mississippi), Little Rock (Arkansas), Oklahoma City (Oklahoma), Amarillo (Texas), and Albuquerque (New Mexico).

I included sightseeing stops in each city and along the way, and many restaurants spotlighted on the Food Network show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

David said “Yes!” in a heartbeat.

We made this trip in February 2013. It was an epic adventure!

My Stories, One Day at a Time
I will post stories from each leg of our road trip, with a new story every month or so.

Of Elvis and Autos

David and I were in Tupelo, where we saw an awesome collection of vintage and classic cars and the birthplace of Elvis. We also watched the Super Bowl with a side of wings and a couple of beers at Buffalo Wild Wings. We were off to a great start on our road trip!

David and I stopped off in Memphis as we drove from Tupelo to Little Rock - time enough for a delicious lunch at Gus's and a fun stroll down Beale Street.

Spinach Capital of the World

David and I were driving through Arkansas on our way to Oklahoma when we decided to stop at a roadside "attraction" - the world's largest can of spinach. Oh...and we said "hi" to Popeye, too!

David and I discovered a Hall of Fame in Amarillo, where we learned about the American Quarter Horse, an equine wonder!
