Alma, Arkansas (February 5, 2013) As we drove to Oklahoma City, I checked my AAA TourBook to see if there were noteworthy roadside attractions ahead.
“We’re close,” I said to David, “to the world’s largest can of spinach.” “What the heck?” he replied. “It’s just up the road.” I answered. “Let’s see it!” And with that, we took the off ramp to Alma, which promoted itself as the “Spinach Capital of the World.” Why? It’s home to Allen Canning Company, which produced more than half the canned spinach in the U.S. – more than 60 million pounds a year. That’s a lot of spinach – perhaps even too much for everyone’s favorite sailor man, Popeye! The town, which celebrated its spinach heritage with an Annual Spinach Festival, installed a bronze statue of Popeye in Popeye Park in 2007.
I'm Popeye the sailor man.
I'm Popeye the sailor man. I'm strong to the finich, cause I eats me spinach. I'm Popeye the sailor man.
By the way, the largest can of spinach turned out to be a water tank painted to look like a can of spinach. The joke was on me!
