Many years ago, Debra and I lived in three Great Lake cities - Rochester, New York, Cleveland, Ohio, and Long Grove, Illinois. We'd had enough of the winters, and in 1998 we moved to Tucson, Arizona. A few years ago we left the "Old Pueblo" and moved to a community northwest of Phoenix. Some might say we moved from hot to hotter...but hot was hot, so a few degrees here or there didn't matter to us.
We love where we live, but if you ask us what we miss about living in the Great Lakes region, Debra and I will answer in unison "the change of seasons." We loved October, with winter on the doorstep, because that was when leaves turned from green to vibrant colors ranging from yellow to orange. That doesn't happen in the desert - saguaro cacti are green (and thorny) year round!
So, how do two desert dwellers quench their thirst for fall foliage? In October 2016, the answer was "take a 14-day cruise to Canada and New England," because that was the prime season to see the beautiful fall foliage in the eastern provinces of Canada and New England states. We were excited!
