“For my part I know nothing about certainty,
but the sight of the stars makes me dream.”
~ Vincent van Gogh

Debra and I talked about traveling to Europe for many years. England, Ireland, Italy (especially Italy!), Spain, and other countries. It was our dream to go, but finding the right time always proved elusive. Things changed in that regard the year I retired. That year Debra and I went to Europe for the first time – three days in Rome and a 12-day Mediterranean cruise. That trip seemed to break the ice for us, so to speak, because we’ve been to Europe every year since.

In April 2018, we went on an eight-day cruise of the Rhine River, sailing from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam, the Netherlands. (Click HERE to read about this amazing trip.) To make the most of our long flights from and to Phoenix, Arizona, we spent four days in Switzerland ahead of the cruise and five days in the Netherlands after the cruise.

Amsterdam was our home base in the Netherlands. We stayed at the Albus – Design Hotel, which was centrally located for everything we wanted to do and see. And we saw and did a lot in and outside of Amsterdam.

Debra and I had a great time, and returned home with many wonderful memories. For us, the five days in the Netherlands were a real Dutch treat!

My Stories, One Day at a Time
I will post stories about each day of our tour, with a new story every month or so.

A Morning Stroll in Amsterdam
Picture
I explored the Centrum borough of Amsterdam, home to many city landmarks. I saw a few sights I intended to see and others by keeping my "eyes wide open." It was a delightful way to spend the morning!

Grand Holland Tour
Picture
We celebrated Debra's birthday with a whirlwind tour of the Netherlands. Some places we saw were as big as life, while others were on a smaller scale. The tour was amazing!

Rembrandt Square
Picture
It was our last afternoon in Amsterdam - time enough for Debra and me to see the famous Dutch master painter and his most famous painting brought to life. It was a "monumental" experience!

The City of Canals
Picture
As Debra and I discovered, the centuries-old canals - each one unique, each one charming - are THE iconic landmark of Amsterdam!
