Hitchin' A Ride

I took my first "adult" trip, that is, a trip without my parents or a chaperone, in 1972 when I was 19. My summer job had just ended and in a few weeks I started my sophomore year at the University of Cincinnati. (Go Bearcats!) I traveled with my friend Bruce, who was a year older and about to start his junior year.

As you can see from the map, this trip covered almost 5,300 miles. We traveled a large swath of the United States from Ohio to California and crossed through a total of 16 states. We didn't drive or fly or take a train. Instead, we traveled by thumb, one ride at a time. We were on the road for two weeks. It was quite an adventure!

Go West, Young Man!

Bruce and I caught a great first ride as we thumbed our way to the Grand Canyon. It was an incredible start to our two-week odyssey!

Our next ride took Bruce and me to Grand Canyon Village. There, we hiked down the South Kaibab Trail, camped overnight alongside Pipe Creek, and hiked up Bright Angel Trail. We had quite the adventure!

San Francisco & Lake Tahoe

With two rides from the Grand Canyon, Bruce and I arrived in the City by the Bay. There we rode the trolley, saw the Golden Gate Bridge, and walked a crooked road. Then we camped overnight in Lake Tahoe and had a near misadventure in Winnemucca, Nevada as we headed home.
