Rome is not like any other city. It's a big museum,
a living room that shall be crossed on one's toes.

Debra and I have traveled a lot over the years – by plane, train, and automobile, and quite often, by ship. All our trips, though, had been to destinations in the northwestern hemisphere – the United States, Canada, Mexico, and many islands in the Caribbean. That changed in May 2016 when we went to Europe for the first time.
We booked a 12-day cruise of the eastern Mediterranean on board the Celebrity Equinox. The itinerary included seven one-day port stops in three countries. With an excursion from each port, Debra and I would have “a taste” of Italy, Greece, and Turkey – perfect for our first trip to Europe! Click HERE to read about our cruise.
The cruise started in Civitavecchia, which is located north of Rome. We had to fly to Rome to reach this embarkation port, so it was a “no-brainer” to add a three-day holiday in the “Eternal City” ahead of our cruise. This was enough time, we felt, to see the major sights, eat great Italian food, and soak up the local culture. And that is what we did.

When I researched “places to stay,” I found that there were more than 700 hotels in Rome and hundreds of vacation rentals. So, where to stay? For Debra and me, the answer was a location central to everything we planned to do – a place from which we could walk to many of Rome’s attractions (and take short taxi rides to others). The “sweet spot” was Piazza Navona, which many websites said was the most beautiful of all the piazzas (“plazas”) in Rome.
Debra and I had an amazing time in Rome. I am pleased to share our experiences and memories with you.
