Essential London, and More

To paraphrase Don Corleone in The Godfather, Debra and I made an offer to our son David that he couldn't refuse. David was smarter than film mogul Jack Woltz, who refused Don Corleone's offer (and woke up to find the severed head of his prized racehorse in his bed!). David said "YES!" right away. You see, our offer was a 10-day trip to Europe in May 2018. Of course, there was a catch - David would have to take the trip with me. Still, he didn't hesitate. Bright boy, that David!

I asked him where he would like to go and what he would like to see, and with his input, I put together an awesome trip: five days in London and a seven-day Scandinavia cruise on the Sapphire Princess. You can read about the cruise HERE. You're in the right place, though, to read about our five days in London.

While David and I stayed in London for five nights, we only spent three days sightseeing in London. (More on the other two days in a moment.) But oh, what fun we had on those three days! It was like binge watching our favorite TV series, but instead of TV, we binged on the "essential" sights in London, including Big Ben, the House of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, St. James Park, and the Tower of London. We also hoisted a pint (or two!) at many of the fine pubs in London - Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, The Red Lion, and Hung, Drawn & Quartered, to name a few.

For the three days in London, we followed detailed route maps that I created ahead of our trip. We used the map to the right on one day, when we traveled on foot from our hotel (H10 London Waterloo) to visit the Tower of London, London Wall, St. Paul's Cathedral, Tate Modern, and more.

"So, what about the other two days?" you might ask. Well, David and I went beyond the essentials of London with two day trips, one to Oxford and one to the county of Kent. We didn't just pick these places by placing our finger on a map while wearing a blindfold. No, we chose them because Debra and I have friends in both places - lovely couples we've met on past travels. And our friends said, "Come on over and we'll show you around." Now, that was an offer neither David nor I could refuse!

David and I set out for London with high hopes. I can tell you that without a doubt this incredible trip exceeded our expectations!

My Stories, One Day at a Time
I will post stories about each day of our trip, with a new story every month or so.

St Martin-in-the-Fields

On our first day in London, David and I visited the St. Martin-in-the-Fields, where we listened to Evensong services. The church was impressive and the service was beautiful!
