My Journey into the Balkan Peninsula

Balkan Peninsula (August 17-27, 2-23) Ping! It was the unmistakable sound—an audio alert—that I had received a text. I picked up my phone, tapped twice on the screen, and read, “Any interest in a Greece-Turkey-Croatia cruise on Holland America in August?”

The text was from my daughter, Jill, a journalist who loves to travel and write about her experiences. Sometimes, she traveled alone. Often, though, she invited me to join her, and over the past five years or so, we’ve traveled together to Alaska, Ireland, New Mexico, North Dakota, and other interesting destinations.

I brought up a web page that listed several Holland America cruises with port stops in Greece, Turkey, and Croatia.

“Of course!” I replied. “Which cruise is it?”

“The 7-day Greek Enchantment that sails from Venice on August 19,” she wrote back.

I opened a link to that cruise and read…

Your 7-day cruise to Greece begins in Venice and swirls to incredible Adriatic isles. Enjoy sun-washed days in Split, Korcula, Santorini, Rhodes, and Kusadasi. Complete the journey in Athens.
I’d visited Santorini, Kusadasi, and Athens with my wife, Debra, in 2016, but I’d never been to Venice or Split or Korcula or Rhodes.

“Let’s add a day in Venice on the front end and a day in Athens on the back end,” I texted.

“Sounds great!” Jill replied.

Our 7-day cruise morphed into a 10-day journey—a journey into the Balkan Peninsula of southeastern Europe.

Jill and I had a grand time as we learned about the culture and history of the places we visited! I look forward to sharing our adventure with you.
