A Road Trip Through South Central Texas

So said the real-life Davy Crockett (and not Fess Parker!) in his
final election defeat in August 1835. Crockett, who had served
as a US Congressman for the state of Tennessee, then joined the Texas revolution and died in the Battle of the Alamo.

In March 2019, Debra and I flew to San Antonio Texas. We retrieved our bags, completed the paperwork on our car rental (a VW Tiguan), and spent the next 13 days sightseeing a triangle of three south central cities – San Antonio, Houston and Austin. We spent a few days in each, and put about 1,200 miles on the odometer as we traveled from city to city and made day trips to outlying destinations.

In the weeks before we left for Texas, Debra and I Googled "things to do in ___"  and created an initial list of 10 places to see in and near each city. After researching each, we narrowed the list to the places that we were most interested in. Like all good plans, ours was flexible, and once we were in Texas we made a modification or two on the fly. All in all, we were pleased with the choices we made. Did we miss something? Sure…but that was what a return trip was for!

We learned a lot about the history of Texas on our trip - the early Spanish missions, the fight for independence, big oil and space flight, and more. We toured a handful of museums, including two presidential libraries, and saw beautiful architecture and countryside. We had a great time!

My Stories, One Day at a Time
I will post stories for each day of our trip, with a new story every month or so.

The Little Venice of Texas

Debra and I took a scenic boat ride and then strolled along the tree-lined Riverwalk, the most popular attraction in San Antonio.

The Spanish Missions of San Antonio
Picture
Debra and I toured the largest concentration of 18th century Spanish frontier missions in the United States. It was a fascinating journey back in time to when San Antonio was Bejar and Texas was Tejas. Outstanding!

A Most Charming Small Town
Picture
Debra and I took a day trip to the historic town of Gruene, Texas, which was settled by German immigrants in the mid-1800s. We nosed around the historic buildings and shops and had the best damned rib eye steaks we've ever had!

Threadgill's
Picture
While in Austin, Debra and I had dinner at Threadgill's. There, in the 1960s, a University of Texas coed got her start to rock stardom!

Of Nature and the Arts in San Antonio

On our last day of sightseeing in San Antonio, Debra and I visited the Botanical Garden and Museum of Art. We had a wonderful time!
