Kauai, Hawaii (February 4, 2020) Do you have a favorite Hawaiian island? Debra and I do, and it’s Kauai. Why? Beauty and diversity. Kauai, aptly named “the Garden Isle,” is covered by tropical rainforests and lush vegetation. We also love the beautiful white sand beaches that stretch along its coastline and spectacular geographical formations.
Jill (our daughter, in the photos to the right) and Michelle (family friend) picked us up at the cruise terminal in Nawiliwili. We drove west across the island to Waimea Canyon State Park, which Debra and I last visited in 2013. Waimea Canyon, often called “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” is the ocean’s largest canyon – 14 miles long, one mile wide, and 3,600 feet deep. It was created by volcanic activity and carved by rainwater that ran from the summit of Mount Wai’ale’ale. The panoramic views from Pu’u Hinahina Lookout were spectacular. Sheer cliffs at the far edge of the canyon, where we spotted the 800-foot tall Waipoo Falls, formed a dramatic backdrop to “pleated” and multicolored gorges that flowed along the floor of the canyon. Debra and I were awestruck by the beauty of Waimea Canyon, an incredible work of Mother Nature! |
