Rome, Italy (October 7, 2017) Debra and I were midway through our five-day Roman holiday, our second trip to the Eternal City in as many years. We had seen the major sites, so this afternoon we “took a road less traveled” by visiting the largest landscaped public park in Rome – Villa Doria Pamphilja. The park began as a country residence for Pope Innocent X (born Giovanni Giambattista Pamphilj) and was subsequently owned by the Doria family.
The weather was picture perfect – 70 degrees and sunny. Debra and I strolled across expansive “lawns” on gentle hills, past a field of yellow wildflowers, and beneath tall acacia trees. Further on, we relaxed on a bench that overlooked a pond. There we watched ducks as they glided across the water. We continued along a tree-lined trail that led to the four-story Baroque-style villa built for Pope Innocent X in the 17th century. It was stunning! On one side of the villa was a geometric garden – a hedged labyrinth. The park was a great escape from the hustle and bustle of Rome. WE LOVED IT! |
