The Turf Tavern

Oxford, England (May 24, 2018) David and I took the train from London to Oxford, where we went on a walking tour of the University of Oxford with our friends and Oxford residents Trish and Peter. We saw many but not all of the thirty-nine colleges that make up the University. I’ll write about the tour, which we loved, in a future post.

We were ready for lunch when the tour ended. Peter suggested the historic and, as we soon learned, somewhat infamous Turf Tavern. “The Turf,” as it is locally known, traces its roots to 1381, when the original building on this site, built outside the old city wall that once protected Oxford, was known as the “Spotted Cow.”

The Turf has had many famous patrons over the years, including Elizabeth Taylor, Margaret Thatcher, Ernest Hemingway, and former President Bill Clinton. In a 1992 interview with TIME, then-governor Clinton admitted he tried pot in the sixties as a 20-something student at the University, but then uttered these infamous words:
“I DIDN’T INHALE IT.”
Sure, Bill (wink, wink!).

We had a delicious lunch of fish and chips, which we “paired” with a pint of ale.
