Inside Passage, Alaska (May 11, 2010) We set sail from Skagway last evening and will arrive in Ketchikan tomorrow morning. This day we sailed the Inside Passage – a relaxing and fun day of sightseeing from the pool deck of the Celebrity Mercury.
The Inside Passage, which was carved by glaciers during the last ice age, is vast. This sheltered sea route extends 1,000 miles from Puget Sound in Washington up the Pacific Coast of British Columbia to Skagway, Alaska. The area includes more than 1,000 islets and islands and there are many coves, fjords, and towns along the coast. The water is deep – large cruise ships can safely sail next to the steep mountains. The weather was beautiful – mild I would say, as evidenced by what we wore: “active wear” for Debra and sandals, shorts, and a short sleeve shirt for me. We watched blue ice float by, enjoyed the waterfalls created by snow melt, and were in awe of the steep cliffs, which often felt close enough to reach out and touch. The views were breathtaking, and the experience was awesome! |
