Athens, Greece (May 23, 2016) Debra and I had an awesome day in the "City of the Violet Crown," where the mythological King Ion was crowned (ion means “violet” in Greek). In the morning we explored the Acropolis (spectacular!) and other sights in Athens, which I'll write about in a future blog.
Our tour guide drove south from Athens to the coastal town of Vouliagmeni, where we had a delicious lunch at Zaxos Grill - a Greek salad (what else?!), souvlaki, and local beer. We continued south to Cape Sounion, the archaeological site of the Temple of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. The temple was built in the middle of the 5th century BCE. Made of marble quarried in nearby Agrileza, the rectangular temple had 13 columns on each side and six columns at each end. Debra and I followed a slightly uphill path to reach the temple, which sits atop a promontory that overlooks the Aegean Sea. We walked the perimeter and stepped onto the marble base. We were amazed to see that 14 of the original columns literally stood the test of time - still upright after 2500 years! It was an incredible experience. |
