Isle of Skye and Orkney Island, Scotland (September 18 and 19, 2019) Debra and I visited these Scottish islands on successive days – one-day port stops on our cruise of the British Isles. We had a grand time sightseeing on both islands, and on each island we saw a breed of two animals we had not seen before.
The Hairy Coo (we loved that name!) is a breed of cattle that originated in the Scottish Highlands and Western Isles. It has long pointed horns and a sturdy body, but its shaggy coat, which comes in a variety of colors, is what sets the Hairy Coo apart from other cattle. The coat serves a purpose – protection from the harsh winds and weather. We saw these Hairy Coos as we toured the Isle of Skye. From hairy cows to wooly pigs, we “met” Peter and Brian on Orkney Island. (Yes, that’s their names!) This breed of pigs, native to Hungary, are Mangalitza – the only breed of pigs with a wooly coat. Unlike a sheep, the wool has no value. We left the islands with many great memories, including our encounters with these strange creatures! |
