Durango, Colorado (June 27, 2015) Like many people, I kept a bucket-list of things to see and do. Our trip to Colorado provided the opportunity to check off a “to do” – river rafting. Debra wanted no part of this activity, so I was on my own. I booked a half-day guided “adventure” on the Lower Animas River with Mild to Wild – about three hours on the water from north of Durango south.
The “Rio de las Animas” (River of Souls) runs 126 miles from Animas Forks, a ghost town near Silverton, into New Mexico. Dropping almost 6,000-feet along the way, the Animas is a major white-water rafting attraction. There were eight others in my raft – our guide and the Andersons, a multigenerational family of seven. I sat in the front row, which in hindsight was a great choice – bigger bounces, more spray! The river flow ranged from “moving water” to “wet and fun” as we made our way through a handful of rapids – Train Bridge, Baby Smelter, Santa Rita, and Sawmill. Smelter Rapid was the most exciting – a big drop that rattled my teeth! It was great fun and a wonderful experience |
