Strasbourg, France (April 29, 2018) Strasbourg is the largest port on the Upper Rhine and capital of the Grand Est region of northeastern France. The city changed hands, between France and Germany, five times from 1871 and 1945. As a result, its architecture and culture incorporate influences from both countries.
Debra and I deboarded the Viking Mani and traveled to Old Town, the city’s center, by coach bus. As we passed through the European Quarter, we saw the Council of Europe, founded in 1949 to promote democracy and human rights. In a residential neighborhood we saw many pairs of white storks, symbols of good fortune and fertility, nested in trees and chimneys! Old Town, surrounded by the small Ill River, was charming! As Debra and I wandered along the cobblestone streets, we passed picturesque canals, half-timbered houses, covered bridges, potted flowers, cafes, and boutiques. Soon we arrived at the towering Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg. Built in the Middle Ages, it was once the world’s tallest building (466 feet). We marveled at the architecture as we relaxed at a nearby café with cups of hot chocolate. We had a splendid time in Strasbourg! |
