Halona Blowhole

Honolulu, Oahu (February 3, 2020) Debra and I spent the day sightseeing on Oahu, the second island stop on our Hawaiian cruise. Earlier we toured the Lyon Arboretum (beautiful!), stopped at the Nu’uanu Pali Lookout Point (awesome views!), and shopped at the Macadamia Nut Farm (delicious!).

Late afternoon we drove east from Honolulu along the scenic Kalaniana’ole Highway to the Halona Blowhole. It is a natural wonder – a lava tube created thousands of years ago when there were active volcanoes on Oahu. The motion of the ocean forced water through the lava tube, and when the force was strong enough, the water erupted as a geyser up to 30 feet in the air!

Debra and I were in awe of the power of the ocean, as we anticipated the geyser that each wave might produce.

Halona means “lookout” In Hawaiian. Apropos, as Debra and I saw miles of beautiful coastline as we stood in front of the blowhole – rock formations, jagged outcroppings, sandy beaches, deep blue ocean water, and white caps that crashed against the shore.

The blowhole and scenery were breathtaking – a wonderful way to end our day of sightseeing on Oahu!
