Nectar of the Gods

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (December 6, 2019) Debra and I have visited Vallarta (as it is often called by the locals) many times over the years. With an active itinerary ahead, Debra opted for a day of R&R aboard the Emerald Princess. Me? I joined fellow passengers on a tour of Hacienda Dona Engracia. Why? Tequila, baby! This hacienda, you see, is a tequila factory.

Almulfo led us on an informative and interesting tour. We learned, for example, that the recipes for these hand-crafted, 100% Blue Agave tequilas were developed by Senor Jesus Ramirez in the 1920s and passed down three generations to his granddaughter Engracia. Almulfo also shared how tequila was prepared, from the harvest through double distillation.

The tour ended in the tasting room, where we had a “wee nip” of three tequilas: Silver (“Good,” Almulfo said, “for margaritas.”), Reposado (“Better,” he remarked. “Share it with friends.”), and Anejo (“THE BEST!” he proudly declared. “It is for you and your loved ones.”). My favorite? Anejo, which had hints of caramel and chocolate and a smoked wood finish. It was the “Nectar of the Gods,” and a bottle of Anejo was the perfect souvenir (for me)!
