Montmorency Falls

Quebec City, Canada (October 21, 2016) It was cold, blustery, and raining – not the weather that Debra and I were accustomed to living in the southwest desert. But no matter, as we were determined to make the most of our time with friends Louiselle and John, who arrived last evening from Montreal.

After a lovely lunch at a restaurant near our hotel, the four of us headed to Montmorency Falls, located about 15 minutes northwest of Quebec City along the St. Lawrence River. French explorer Samuel de Champlain named the 272-foot waterfall – nearly 100 feet taller than Niagara Falls – le grand saut de Montmorency, “the great falls of Montmorency,” in honor of his friend Charles de Montmorency.

We had spectacular views from two look-out points – an observation deck alongside the falls and a suspension bridge above the falls. I loved the view from the bridge because I also heard the roar and felt the force of the white water as the Montmorency River rushed over the cliff and plunged into the water basin below. It was absolutely breathtaking!

This was a wonderful time to see the waterfall, as the trees that framed it were resplendent in autumn colors.
