Portree, Isle of Skye, Scotland (September 18, 2019) Debra and I boarded a tender that carried us from the Pacific Princess, which anchored in the harbor, to the port town of Portree, the capital of the Isle of Skye. We spent the day sightseeing with four fellow passengers, and an awesome day it was!
Our first stop was along the rugged coastline of Scotland’s second largest island, about 15 miles north of Portree – a popular observation point on the Trotternish Peninsula with a panoramic view of an ancient cliff and the Sound of Raasay. The famous Kilt Rock (the cliff in the background of this photo) has vertical, sea-weathered basalt columns that stand atop Jurassic-era sandstone. These columns formed “pleats” along its sheer wall, and gave rise to the name of this cliff, which was said to resemble a kilt. |
In the foreground of the photo is Mealt falls, which plummets 180 feet to the rocky shoreline of the Sound of Raasay. The falls are fed by nearby Mealt Loch (“Lake”).
Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls were spectacular sights - a “WOW!” start to our day of sightseeing on this beautiful island!
