Ensenada, Mexico (February 11, 2020) Debra and I have been to this port town on the Pacific coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula many times, always a one-day stop on a cruise to Hawaii or along the coast of California. We’ve seen the sights we wanted to see, so this afternoon I went on a solo walk through town while Debra relaxed on the Star Princess.
I strolled along the inner harbor, filled with fishing boats and pleasure craft, where I passed a statue of Senora del Carmen, the patron saint of sailors. My nose led me to the nearby fish market, which offered the day’s catch (and a strong smell!). Then I made my way to Paseo Calle Primera, lined with shops that sold kitchy souvenirs. At one shop I bought an Ensenada ballcap. At another, Pablo was happy to sell me a leather belt. “$40” he said, “ but for you Senor, only $25!" As I made my way to the ship, I visited Plaza de la Patrio, home to three large busts that honored historic figures important to Mexico’s fight for independence. It was a fun diversion – a nice way to spend a couple of hours! |
