A Lovely Day in Hafelfingen

Hafelfingen, Switzerland (April 22, 2018) Debra and I were in Basel – five days of sightseeing ahead of our Rhine River Cruise. We spent this day with friends Christine, Lukas and their daughters at their home in Hafelfingen, about 20 miles southwest of Basel. The views from their backyard were amazing!

Early afternoon, Lukas, his daughters and I headed to Wisenberg, a wooded mountain within the Jura Mountains. From Hupp Lodge on the mountain’s slope, we hiked up and into the forest. Having spent the last few days in cities, it was a treat to walk among the trees!

Our hike wasn’t aimless, as Lukas led us to Wisenbergturm (“Wisenberg Tower”), an observation tower that sits on the summit of the mountain – almost 3,300 feet above sea level. From the top of the 80-foot tower, we had spectacular panoramic views that included the Swiss Alps and Black Forest, a mountainous region in southwest Germany.

That evening, we created individual pizzas that Lukas baked in an outdoor oven. They were delicious! After dinner, Lukas and his oldest daughter serenaded us on a labrophone, a traditional long horn used by mountain dwellers in the Alps.

We had a wonderful day!
