I took my first "adult" trip, that is, a trip without my parents or a chaperone, in 1972 when I was 19. My summer job had just ended and in a few weeks I started my sophomore year at the University of Cincinnati. (Go Bearcats!) I traveled with my friend Bruce, who was a year older and about to start his junior year.
As you can see from the map, this trip covered almost 5,300 miles. We traveled a large swath of the United States from Ohio to California and crossed through a total of 16 states. We didn't drive or fly or take a train. Instead, we traveled by thumb, one ride at a time. We were on the road for two weeks. It was quite an adventure!
