Jill and me in Miami before we sailed
Miami and The Bahamas (April 9 – 16, 2025) Sailing on a christening cruise is a thrilling experience because it’s not just any voyage—it’s the inaugural celebration of a brand-new ship. The atmosphere is festive, and there’s an undeniable sense of history—being among the first to step on a vessel that’s setting sail for the very first time.
“I was there when it all began,” I could say—not once, but twice. Jill, a freelance journalist who writes extensively on travel, invited me to join her on the inaugural voyages aboard MSC’s World America and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Aqua. Both were three-night “showcase sailings” that offered a first look at amenities, entertainment, and dining options—and included, of course, christening ceremonies.
The guest lists were carefully curated—journalists, influencers, travel partners, VIPs, and their ‘plus ones’ (as we guests were called!)—creating a selective atmosphere that aligned with the cruise lines’ branding and media strategy. With the number of guests at about half the total capacity, MSC and Norwegian ensured a more personalized experience by “running light.”
Jill and I also spent a day in Miami between the cruises. We did a bit of sightseeing—the highlight was a unique sculptural garden—and had a stylish night out at an upscale restaurant with a supper club-style atmosphere.
I had a grand time from start to finish! I look forward to sharing my experiences with you through a series of stories, each highlighting a different aspect of my adventure.
